Missouri IRP and IFTA

Missouri IRP and IFTA Q&A

What are IRP and IFTA?
The International Registration Plan (IRP) and International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) are cooperative agreements among U.S. states and Canadian provinces that streamline the collection and distribution of registration fees and fuel tax revenues. These programs simplify compliance by allowing carriers to manage licensing and reporting requirements through their base (home) jurisdiction.

Who is required to have IRP and IFTA?
An IRP and IFTA account is required for motor carriers operating vehicles that cross state or provincial lines and meet either of the following conditions:

  • Have a gross vehicle weight (GVW) exceeding 26,000 pounds, or
  • Have three or more axles on the power unit.

What do I receive after setting up IRP and IFTA accounts?

  • IRP: You will receive an Apportioned License Plate for your power unit along with an Apportioned Cab Card that specifies the states and provinces in which your vehicle is authorized to operate.
  • IFTA: You will receive a set of IFTA decals (stickers) for your power unit and an IFTA license, which must be kept in the vehicle cab at all times.
